Everyone's Favorite Taco Shells

Everyone's Favorite Taco Shells

4 cups flour
2 tablespoons oil, plus oil for frying
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/4 cups cold water

Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl using a pastry blender, and then use your hands until the dough reaches a roll-able consistency.  Break off 1 1/2 to 2 inch piece of dough, make a ball.  Roll on a floured surface until it is a very thin round 4 to 6 inch circle.  Fill with cooked taco meat, fold in half, and crimp the edges. Fry in vegetable oil at 375 degrees until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towel. Unfold edges and top with your favorite taco toppings.

I may live in New Mexico, but my favorite tacos are in Des Moines, Iowa.  Tasty Taco’s, are my first stop when I am hit town.  Their deep fried taco shells remind me of Indian Fry Bread, and make the taco unique and special.

My aunt gave me this recipe years ago.  She said she got it from someone who worked at the restaurant.  It tastes just like the shells at Tasty Taco’s, so I tend to believe her story.

This taco shell recipe will take your family taco night from average to extraordinary!  It is that good!

My new cookbook will be available at the Iowa State Fair, and soon it will be available at schools, businesses, hospitals, and book fairs in cities across the United States.  Be sure to pick up a copy or two, when you see them.  They make great gifts!

  6. OMG Linda I can believe I finally found the recipe for Tasty Tacos. I like you think they are the best tacos anywhere. I have lived in Dallas now for 15years and the first place I head to when I get back to DSM is Tasty Tacos. I even went into the store on Hickman and begged for a copy of the recipe to no avail. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I can't wait to try thest tonight!!!!
