Ketchup Trick

I needed to clean a couple of antique solid brass lamps and I couldn't find any cleaners at the four stores I looked at.  Finally in my frustration I decided to search the web for how to clean them.  I was surprised when the search resulted in an unexpected kitchen item,  Ketchup!

I grabbed a cheap $0.87 bottle of ketchup; I didn't want to waste the good stuff on something that I didn't know if it would really work.  But I was excited to try this trick.

As soon as the ketchup touched the brass, you could see it working. I felt like jumping up and down, I was so happy it was working.

It was so easy! Wipe it on. Wipe it off and rinse with water and dry.  No need to scrub or buff.

I love learning new things and this tip is one I will definitely use again!

My new cookbook is available at schools, businesses, hospitals, and book fairs in cities across the United States.  Be sure to pick up a copy or two, when you see them.  They make great gifts!

Oops! Easy Clean Up Tip

My family loves eggs.  We consumed them even when they were on the "Bad" food list.  Now that eggs are on the "Good" list again, we can eat eggs without feeling judged by the food police.

Cooking more eggs means there are more chances for me to drop one or two.  I really try hard not to, but some how I am always making a mess in the kitchen.  Eggs make a big mess when dropped on the floor.

One morning as I was fixing breakfast, my Mom called.  I dropped an egg and complained to my Mom about how hard it was to clean up egg from the floor.  She told me to sprinkle about 3 tablespoons of salt over the egg and let it set for a couple of minutes, then whipping it up will be easier.  I always do what my Mom tells me (well not always, but don't tell her that), so I followed her directions.

It was amazing!  Instead of the slimy egg moving all over the floor, I was able to wipe it up easily.  Unfortunately, I have used this tip several times since that phone call.

On Friday I will post my recipe for,
Tuna Noodle Casserole.

Tuesday Tip:Easy Cleanup for Contact Grills

The weather in New Mexico, the last week has been cold and snowy.  I usually grill out all year long, but when the temperature dips to -9 degrees, it is time for me to move the grilling inside.

Typically, I spray the grill with cooking spray before I cook on it.  If I forget, I use this tip:

Clean your contact grill the easy way; after you finish grilling up a tasty meal, while the grill is still hot, unplug the grill, and place several damp paper towels on the grill then close the lid. While you eat, the steam from the wet paper towels will loosen baked on food.

Every month I have a drawing giving away a copy of my cookbook,
My Kind of Cooking Cookbook, and other goodies.
The next drawing is, this Friday, January 7th.

Tip: To clean or not to clean? That is the question.

Do you scrub your grill clean with soap and water after or before you grill out?  According to research, you don't have to clean it up with lots of soap and water.  If you scrub the grill with a wire brush and then heat the grill to a high temperature, you will kill all the bacteria that is lingering there.

My husband has been saying that for years, but don't tell him he was right.  It will be our little secret.

Check back on Friday when I post my
Grilled Orange Chicken recipe.

Tip: Clean As You Go

"Clean as you go" is the first tip my mom taught me.  If cleaning the kitchen were an Olympic sport, my mom would take home the gold!  She has the kitchen completely spotless before we sit down to eat.  She is amazing!

Here are the tips my mom taught me to follow when I cook:

1. Before you start cooking, fill the sink with warm soapy water.  As you dirty dishes, wash them immediately.

2. Keep a dish cloth handy, so you can wipe up spills as you make them.

3. Put away ingredients after you are finished using them.

Following these simple steps will make cooking even more enjoyable!
