Tuesday's Tips & Tricks: Chopping Bacon

I think everyone has at least one task in the kitchen that they do not enjoy doing.  For me, it is chopping bacon.  I hate it!  The bacon is greasy and it moves around on the cutting board as I try to slice it.  There had to be an easier way to do this.

I had just finished using my kitchen shears to cut up some herbs, so I grabbed them and decided to try it on the bacon.  It worked great!  Now I only use my kitchen shears to cut the bacon into the size I need.  I cut it right into the skillet that I will be using to fry it in.  It is so easy!  You get perfect cuts and less mess by using this method.

Sometimes I stack the bacon and other times I just get it straight from the package. Then I chop away with my kitchen shears.

Which kitchen task do you enjoy doing the least?

  1. I saw Nigella do this one time on her show, and it's the only way I dice bacon now!

    1. Thanks, Pam! There are a lot of different tricks people say will help when chopping onions, but when you get a strong onion they always fail for me.

  4. Brilliant idea I will remember this. I also use my herb scissors (ones with 5 blades) for cutting up pimentos. I just hold the stalk, and then I do not get them on my fingers. No worries about wiping your eye by mistake afterwards. Diane

  6. Linda...I use my shears too, but if it needs to be diced fine...I put it in the freezer for a few minutes, makes it much easier to cut with a knife.

  7. Brilliant tip! Thank you for cutting my baking chopping time in half!
My least favorite kitchen task is peeling garlic. It takes me forever to get the skin off. Have any tips for making this an easier task?
